Human Biology > Thesis / Internships
Writing Your Thesis
The second year of the degree programme is devoted to work on an individual research project (the master's thesis). This element gives students experience in independently solving an experimental problem within modern biomedical research and writing an extended report (approx. 50-60 pages). Students gain experience of laboratory work, knowledge of modern scientific methods, and practise in researching scientific literature.
There is also emphasis on dissemination skills, with students encouraged to hold seminars on their work during project work for the thesis.
Combining your thesis with a research placement
The thesis project can be carried out at the University, but many students elect to combine this work with research placements/internships in private research laboratories, biotech companies, government institutions or university hospitals. A research placement can give students important access to research and development facilties and the opportunity to forge ties outside of academia. All students are assigned a supervisor to help guide the project work.
Writing Your Thesis Abroad
The possibilities for an internship are not limited to Denmark. Some students have also written their master's thesis in research departments abroad. The research placement is planned by the student in cooperation with their chosen host institution.
There may be tuition fees or other fees associated with research work at a foreign institution. All full-degree students at the University of Copenhagen who spend at least 3 months abroad can, however, apply to the KU internationalisation stipend which can be used for payment of tuition, books, travel.
